You want to shut down the bullshit memes and trash-talking your generationâs getting from Boomers?
Vote. Vote in every damn single election, from PTA on to President. Own your country so hard Boomers will be calling YOU sir. Fuck up their projected demographics and plant your flag in every political office in the land.
The Supreme Court just issues a ruling allowing Ohio and other states to purge voters from their election registration rolls due to their failure to cast a ballot in previous elections.
This is a major victory for the Trump administration and the GOP, and a direct consequence of the Supreme Court being stacked with more conservative judges (the votes were 5-4). This is also a huge part of what Trump/the GOP were counting on to save them in the 2018 midterm elections, which is where Democrats have been hoping to take back a majority in the House, giving them more power to combat Trumpâs abuses of power and Republican legislation.
What this means is YOU CAN NOT ASSUME THAT YOU ARE REGISTERED for the 2018 elections, just because you SHOULD be. Thanks to this decision, red states can purge votersâ registration based on their not having cast a ballot in even just previous federal elections, NOT just the national Presidential elections. Effectively, if you havenât voted in previous senate races or for congressional representatives in the past few years, thatâs all they need now to say youâre no longer registered and need to register again.
Theyâre deliberately counting on people assuming theyâre still registered and so not checking until after registration deadlines have passed, or showing up to vote this November and only then finding out theyâre no longer registered, when its too late to do a damn thing about it.
And this is absolutely targeted at marginalized communities, low income voters, disabled voters, and basically anyone who simply canât always AFFORD to keep on top of every federal election and show up to vote in every senate race, etc. Which not so coincidentally happen to be all the communities and voters who have the most to gain from Democratic victories in the 2018 midterms and are the least likely to cast votes for GOP candidates at this point.
This was absolutely a calculated effort aimed specifically at keeping the GOP in power with a majority control of the government come November, and unfortunately, it has a DAMN good chance of accomplishing just that if it goes by unacknowledged. Iâm not looking to alarm or panic anyone, simply to say:
If you are a registered voter in a red state at this point, please please please do not take your registered status as assumed. Check on your registration status, look up all relevant voter registration deadlines for your state and district, CIRCLE THAT SHIT ON YOUR CALENDAR, and check your registration status AGAIN right before those deadlines pass, so you can be sure of it before its too late to do anything about it til the next voting cycle.
But a new study projects that 40 million Americans who voted last year will likely not show up at the polls for the 2018 midterms.
And that two-thirds of those âdrop-offâ voters will be millennials, unmarried women and people of color.
The report, just out from the Voter Participation Center and Lake Research Partners, âComparing the Voting Electorate in 2012-2016 and Predicting 2018 Drop-off,â notes that many of those expected not to cast a ballot next year live in key battleground states like Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Ohio. Young people in America, REGISTER TO VOTE AND GET TO THE POLLS NEXT YEAR
THIS MATTERS
YOUR VOTE MATTERS SO MUCH OKAY
Just look at the difference young people getting out and voting made in the UK general election this yearâŚyoung voters CAN make a POSITIVE DIFFERENCE by getting out and votingÂ
And I know this isnât a presidential election but it is in some ways EVEN MORE IMPORTANT
Because the president canât do anything without congress and the senate on his sideâŚbut likewise, if the Republicans get a majority it means it will be easier for that disgusting sack of stinking dog-vomit Donald Trump and his party of traitors and criminals to push through the DISGUSTING things they want to try and inflict on the country and its people
Get out and vote democrat next year and keep the Republicans from getting a blank check to try and push through their bigoted, evil bullshit
Iâm pretty sure the biggest barrier to young people voting isnât not caring, itâs not knowing.
Am I registered? Shit, who knows? Iâve moved five times in the last four years. I think I registered, but that was a year ago, did I change districts since then? Where even are the polling places in this town? What are their hours? I know I submitted a registration, but did they get it? I didnât get a confirmation. Did they lose my form? Am I even eligible? Who knows? Oh well, Iâm sure I can always register in the days leading up to the â whoops, thereâs a deadline and itâs already gone by.
This is one of those civic skills that you would really think would be taught in high school, and â surprise! â it isnât.
Of course, all of this â in the way of Tumblr, and the internet more generally â will be lost to the vagaries of cyberspace by the time November rolls around. So hey: tag it with âvoting referenceâ and youâll always be able to find it again.
Boosting because us Millenials are nothing but fueled by spite, and blowing this projection out of the water would be delicious
Reblogging because us Gen Xers grew up in the last shadow of nuclear war and I keep having flashbacks⌠Please vote. Even just pick the few offices that matter most to you, please stay engaged and letâs make this mess a little bit better.
If America didnât have the Electoral College, which now must be abolished, we wouldnât have had any Republican Presidents since George H. W. Bush.
Since there is very little likelihood of the Electoral College being abolished (which it absolutely does need to be), please remember that a Democrat vote is, in some places, one third of a Republican vote. We need more, a lot more, to win because the system is so messed up.
If Democrats take the House, their current ranking member of the Financial Services Committee becomes the chair of the committee, and has the power to subpoena Trumpâs bank records. That member is Maxine Waters. Vote.
