unpopular opinion but it’s cool if you don’t want to be in love
like, idk. I used to feel so compelled to make excuses for being single, whether it was self-deprecating jokes about myself or insisting that I was too busy for a relationship or making myself go out on uncomfortable and pointless dates just to make a show of trying to not be single. there’s such an expectation that if you’re single you should be actively working of changing that, and it’s like. nah. there are 9999 other things you can be focusing your time and energy on and if you don’t really feel like being in a relationship now or ever that’s cool.
yes and no. I’m aro as hecky but this post is also for people who maybe want a relationship eventually but just aren’t feeling it right now. we’re all cool.
I was thinking about why I prefer to read manga over American comics (as in, monthly serialized comics) and, putting aside opinions about the “quality” of either medium, I think the reason why is because I have absolutely no idea how American comics work.
Say you’re a complete noob to manga. You don’t know shit about it. But that One Piece thing you saw on TV looks really cool and you want to read it. Where do you start? Volume 1 and go from there.
But imagine the same situation but with comics. You just saw the new Spiderman movie and now you got a craving for more like it. Where do you begin? Well, no one knows because there’s been 901823434^34 different iterations of the character for decades.
With manga, there’s usually one guy (and maybe a team of artists under them to help) working on it. Even if it goes on for years or may switch leads, there’s usually some “consistency” to keep everything in check. With American comics on the other hand, it’s the complete opposite: you have multiple different writers and artists, each contributing their own take on the character: alternate timelines, alternate motifs, etc etc. It’s all a big clusterfuck to me and I have no idea how anyone can keep track of it all.
i wanna read spiderman, where do i start?
“well, you’ll have to choose one of the major points in the series to start at and then switch between different iterations depending on what kind of tone you’re looking for“
i wanna read jojo, where do i start?
“volume 1“
“I want to read X-Men and Wolverine, where do I start?”
me age 13: OMG!!! TEAM EDWARD!!!!! I LOVE TWILIGHT!!! TEAM EDWARD TEAM EDWARD TEAM EDW
me age 16: i fucking hate twilight i never want to see it again get it away from me what the fuck was wrong with me
me age 18: omg wtf twilight isn’t so bad but why was i ever team edward he’s so abusive and controlling jacob is clearly the superior choice for bella i’m team jacob forever now
me age 20: Jacob Black is the epitome of the “nice guy” who plays heavily into “friendzone” culture. Bella has, on multiple occasions, told Jacob she has no romantic interest in him yet he continues to peruse her, even forcing himself on her against her will. She punches him after he forces a kiss on her but since he is a werewolf her hand bounces off his face and it’s laughed off as a joke while Jacob faces no real consequences for his actions. While Edward has exhibited abusive and controlling behavior, he stands in contrast to Jacob. Jacob will not stop pushing Bella to admit she has feeling for him while Edward, with the exception of a few minor incidents, takes the high road and doesn’t engage in Jacob’s childish and harmful practices. He does his best to protect Bella from harm and protect her ability to chose a human life or a life with him. What is really interesting is the Team Edward/Team Jacob culture that was perpetuated by this fandom when Bella Swan was the protagonist. Bella was essentially erased from the narrative by fans who wanted her with either Jacob or Edward and her choices were narrowed down to a controlling emo 100 year old vampire or a whiny man child werewolf. I am team Bella Swan and I support her ability to choose the life she wants. (Reference: Meyer, Stephenie. Twilight. , 2005. Print.)
I love how baby boomers will talk about child-rearing like “I was beaten and repressed as a kid and turned out fine” and then like fifteen minutes later they’ll be like “A cashier at a clothing store wouldn’t take my expired coupon, this is a PERSONAL AFFRONT and you have to help me get them FIRED.”
Like. Are you sure you turned out fine, though? Cuz like. It seems like maybe you didn’t.
