So I was doing some research on common medications for a pharmacology class at school, and realized that Wikipedia is calling out the outrageous practices of pharmacological sales in the US. Right up there in the main intro to the medication they’re showing how much the drug costs to produce, versus how much a typical course of treatment costs in the USA.

Amoxicillin, a front line antibiotic, typically taken at one pill per day. 10 pills cost between 0.20 and 0.50 USD to produce, marked up at up to 80 times the price in the US.

Salbutamol, AKA an asthma puffer, on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines (considered to be the most important basic medications needed to be stocked by a pharmacy/hospital), a life saving medication.

How about oxygen? A tank of oxygen, used as a basic treatment for everything from low blood oxygen to respiratory failure to maintaining oxygen while administering anesthesia for an operation?

Epinephrine/adrenaline, AKA an epipen, given to people having a type of severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, where their airways swell and close up. A person in anaphylaxis will die without epinephrine/adrenaline. Costs at most $0.95 to produce, and they’re sold for $70 at the absolute cheapest for a single vial.

Naloxone/Narcan, used to stop an opioid overdose. $5.30, at most, to produce. $4500 to buy.

Bisoprolol/Zebeta, given for high blood pressure, angina (chest pain), and heart failure, sold at over 1000% it costs to produce.

The combined birth control pill, ethinylestradiol/levonorgestrel.

Also, just so you’re aware, as of late Mat 2018, 1.80 GBP is 2.40 USD. For a three month supply of the pill. The same amount could cost you 150 USD in the United States.

The MMR vaccine, given to prevent mumps, measles, and rubella – diseases that could leave you deaf, blind, infertile.

so stfu capitalists who say that nationalized healthcare in the US isn’t “affordable”. you’re just money hungry mother fuckers who hate people

Since the 1980s, we’ve heard the GOP talk about how “regulations kill innovation” and “regulations stifle business.”

Meanwhile, drug prices have gone up like this (see also: why airplane seats get ever smaller) – because regulations were revoked that set price limits on essential medicines AND allowed widespread marketing.

And man, as someone who was a kid in the 1970s, before the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act, I remember how often the air outside just smelled awful. I remember what it’s like to fly on an airplane full of people smoking.

They get away with this stuff because they control the narrative and have made the word “regulation” itself an insult – when they’re protections. We need to reclaim this topic.

Here’s a depressing article from 2000: https://www.thenation.com/article/these-messes-are-what-deregulation-gets-us/ Almost 20 years ago!!!

since pride month is coming up, that also means we’re getting closer to the month when there’ll be 10000 posts reminding us that all the gay pride merch is just a corporate cash-in, that these corporations don’t care about us, that the world isn’t really any better, that none of the pride merch and ads actually mean anything, that it isn’t really progressive, blah blah blah

let me just say

i know. most people on here know. you are not the sole thinking person in a world of sheep. i promise you that the person you’re making all these points to has heard it 100 times 100 ways from 100 other people. we know, tumblr. we know.

but dammit, one month a year i get rainbow everything, and that’s a breath of fresh air after eleven months of straight nonsense. i LOVE seeing pride everywhere, even if it is just a corporate cash-grab. and it’s not like i can just opt out of this capitalist society, so fuck it, imma buy all the rainbow, pride-themed, gay merch i can get my hands on.

the world is a capitalist hellhole and there is no escape, so we may as well have what fun we can with it while we try and make things better.

happy pride, folks.

As an added point, a lot of sponsorships and merch go a long way toward funding local LGBT agency operations, some of them for the full year. It’s not the system we want, but tanking sales of rainbow merch at pride events really only hurts local agencies! Support your local community centers and social service centers working for LGBTQ people!

I’m just going to leave this thread here from my own Twitter account last June.

Look. Here’s thing about “just a corporate cashgrab” Discourse.

Yes, the corporations just want our money. We know.

That is because they are corporations, and that is what corporations do. That is the sole purpose of their existence, to try to get their grubby hands on your money, my money, literally all of everyone’s money.

It’s not that they think the queer community is uniquely susceptible to being bamboozled into trusting them. What the hell do you think regular advertising is? They do this to literally everyone because that is the nature of corporate behavior: see opportunity to sell more stuff, jump on it, ???, profit.

The only difference is that with Pride-related cashgrabs, they are saying publicly that they acknowledge queer folks as a demographic and that yes in fact they would like to stick their hands into our wallets just like they do to the str8s.

Also like… They’re normalizing being lgbt+

Changing some ads and adding rainbows to things for June. It’s turning Pride into another part of the seasonal merch cycle.

We have Valentine’s day, easter, christmas, holloween, memorial day, labor day, vetrans day, st Patrick’s day, the fourth of july, back to school, star of summer, new years, sinco de mayo, this weekend only!, black Friday, thanksgiving, columbus day like… when have corporations not used something as an excuse to sell more stuff and make more money? Like i only remember most of these things exist because i see commercials for sales for them.

But hey if a company wants to plasters rainbows over all their shit and be supportive of the community – which let’s be real, acknowledging pride month and selling merch for it is about as big an endorsement as a company can give in terms of being visibly supportive because every customer that walks by it is going to know what it’s for- well let them add another holiday to their calendar. Let them make it completely normal for june to be a month of rainbows and normalizing our community as a thing.

Like when we see national ad campaigns for pride month merch, for sales going on, that’s when I’ll be satisfied with corporations trying to get my money. Until then, they’re still working on it.

So with all the info coming out of the Pokemon Gold and Silver Demo that was found, I figured I’d make a neat little post showing Pokemon that were Cut from the game or Heavily Changed before full release organized in a neat sheet. And with the color sprites!

While it is a shame some of these never say the light of day (that Ditto Evolution is personal favorite), there are also some things that are better left on the cutting room floor.

Like that Lickitung Evolution.

Thank you, whoever is responsible, for making sure that thing didn’t come to exist.

U.S. senators introduce “Do No Harm Act”

Heather Greene —  May 31, 2018

Senate bill 2918 was introduced May 22, led by U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), and Mazie Hirono (D-HI).  In a press release, Harris said, “The freedom to worship is a founding principle of this nation as well as the right to live free of discrimination or fear that one’s civils[sic] rights will be undermined because of race, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity. The Do No Harm Act will ensure we protect both these rights for all.”…

Despite any debates surrounding the use of RFRAs, most experts do agree that the Do No Harm Act will not pass in a Republican-controlled congress.

Leahy said, “While the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) was originally passed by Congress to protect the rights of religious minorities, it has been contorted in recent years to defend discriminatory practices against LGBTQ individuals and women seeking access to reproductive health services. The Do No Harm Act would help put an end to misuse of the act and ensure that longstanding anti-discrimination protections in the law are not eroded.”

wanting and not wanting at the same time

a comic for asexual awareness week

bringing this back today for the start of pride month. still overwhelmed by how well this comic went down and with how many people relate. it’s easy to think aro-ace people are all totally accepting of their identities and really proud of who they are. i guess on websites like this you see a lot of people proudly putting their identity in their bio, a flag in their profile picture.

in fact i think a lot of aro-ace people really hate that part of themselves, hide it, and struggle for a long time to ‘accept’ who they are and feel any sense of ‘pride’. that’s the feeling i wanted to capture here. the disappointment, the loneliness, upon realising that you can’t feel what is such a wonderful thing. the embarrassment of not being ‘normal’, of being some random sexuality that nobody irl has heard of, and letting down those around you because you can’t be who they want you to be. how desperately you want to change, how desperately you want to feel. but you just can’t.

i know not all aro-ace people feel like this. i know lots of aro and/or ace people feel able to be in relationships, to feel closeness and have partners in other ways. but i think it’s important to be aware that some aro-ace people do feel like this.

the comments on this comic have mostly been great but a few have been very frustrating. a comment it got a lot was along the lines of ‘aw!! you don’t need to have sex to be in a relationship!’. you completely missed the point, hah. this is not a comic about sex. it’s about a lack of feeling, the lack of something beautiful other people seem to have. another comment that popped up a few times was ‘maybe she’s a lesbian’. well maybe lesbians and aro/ace girls have more in common than people think – maybe they both often struggle to accept that they feel no attraction to men, even though society has conditioned them to do so, sometimes spending years trying to force themselves to like men in that way, when they just can’t.

this comic is called ‘wanting and not wanting at the same time’ because she wants to love. but when it comes down to the reality, she can’t fulfil the requirements of that. she wants to love someone forever, to get married and have children and grow old with her soulmate, but she doesn’t want it with this person. or that person. or anyone she meets or will ever meet. a sort of catch 22, i guess.

hope that makes sense. thanks for listening, and have a lovely pride month ❤️

@mutuals stop and think before you reblog a post that has the word “lgbtia+” in it. advice from your friendly intersex mutual, archy: STOP dragging intersex ppl into the lgbt community. idc if you think aces/aros are lgbt just stop dragging other ppl into this. stop putting a fucking i in the acronym. intersex isn’t a gender OR a sexuality- it’s a medical condition. we have time and time again asked for you guys to recognize this, time and time again asked for you guys to stay out of our issues, but you continue to misgender us and use us as props for your arguments. your “lgbtia+ positivity” isn’t nice, it’s hurtful, it literally makes me so dysphoric because i’m basically being told that my genitals and chromosomes somehow make me inherently nonbinary. i’m not lgbt because i’m intersex, i’m lgbt because i’m trans and gay. y’all aren’t being “inclusive” or “recognizing our issues,” most of the time y’all don’t even know what intersex means and it’s obvious when you group it in with genders and sexualities. by dragging us into the lgbt community you are misgendering so many people and intersexist as fuck.
